Originally founded in 1984 as the National Transportation Safety Board Bar Association, today’s International Air & Transportation Safety Bar Association (IATSBA) has grown to comprise attorneys from across the United States and other parts of the globe.  Many routinely practice before the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

While the original focus of the group centered on representation of pilots and aviation businesses in regulatory, certification, and enforcement proceedings, the Association has grown to encompass members who practice extensively in other areas of transportation law to include:  accident litigation, mass casualty accident litigation, aviation insurance defense, transportation transactions, aviation and transportation taxation, and business law with a focus on aviation and other transportation enterprises.  Membership in the Association is open to practicing attorneys, law students, and other individuals interested in aviation and transportation law.

The mission of IATSBA is to enhance the professional legal education of its members and to foster collegiality and professionalism in the practice of aviation and transportation law.  In addition, IATSBA seeks to advance the development of aviation and transportation law in a manner that improves the safety of transportation worldwide while protecting the rights and privileges of those individuals and companies active in the field.

If you would like to become a member, please use the online Membership Application Form. The Application contains membership fee information and submission instructions.

Practice before federal agencies such as the Department of Transportation (DOT), its regulatory administrations such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), DHS’s Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) requires knowledge of the numerous laws, regulations, procedures, and policies governing practice before those agencies. As with any specialized area of the law, a key element of successful and competent representation is the accumulated body of knowledge and experience concerning the field and the institutions with which one interacts. Members of IATSBA receive recurring education and training on a broad array of transportation topics and opportunities to interact with members of the transportation legal and regulatory communities. IATSBA also provides a mechanism to share ideas and thoughts with others from within government and currently in private practice. Additionally, IATSBA provides a conduit through which important changes in the law are rapidly disseminated, so that each member of our community is knowledgeable about evolving trends and specific changes when it counts most. Join today, learn more about transportation law, and meet others practicing in the field.
